Ei Thinzar Maung



On March 10, Ei Thinzar Maung was arrested and accused of participation in the protest for education reform in Letpadan, Pegu Division and detained in Tharawaddy Prison. She is being held under sections 143 (being a member of an unlawful assembly), 145 (joining or continuing in the unlawful assembly), 147 (rioting), 332 (hurting a public servant in the discharge of his duty), and 505(b) of the Penal Code. Prosecutor for the case is Police Major Bhone Myint from Letpadan police station. The judge is U Myat Kyaw.

Ei Thinzar Maung holds a Diploma of Foreign Language from Mandalay University and is a member of the Mandalay District Student Union. She was detained by the police during a protest against the Education Bill in Letpadan, Bago division on March 6, and was released the following day. “They asked my personal profile. We told them that they are the authorities so they should investigate on their own. They asked us to sign a pledge not to [protest] before they released us. We told them to charge us because we refuse to sign it since we might protest more. The government is deliberately doing this to create a general crisis”, said Ei Thinzar Maung after she was released.


Ei Thinzar Maung was arrested with other student leaders, during the protest against the National Education Law in Latpadan. She has been detained in notorious Tharawaddy Prison and is currently facing trial as of March 11, in Letpadan court.

Ei Thinzar Maung is one of the youngest 2020 candidates from the DPNS, a party led by the former student leaders of the 88 uprising, pro-democracy protests in 1988. The 26-year-old woman is running for a seat in the Lower House of Parliament, representing the Pabedan Township constituency. A human rights activist since 2012, she was the first female president of the student union of Yadanabon University. She was among the several students who were arrested and faced violent crackdowns in 2015 for seeking changes to an education bill that limited academic freedom. She has been involved in human rights activities on behalf of minority groups, including the Rohingya, and has demanded an end to armed conflicts in Kachin and Rakhine states.
